US Open: Aslan Karatsev vs. Jordan Thompson 9/2/21 Tennis Prediction

Aslan Karatsev (21) of Russia will face Aussie Jordan Thompson in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday September 2nd, 2021.

An interesting match is upon us here in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open as Aslan Karatsev and Jordan Thompson do battle. Karatsev is the clear favorite on paper but has largely disappointed since his amazing start to the year, while Thompson tends to run “hot and cold” but can be very dangerous when things are going his way. Who will get the win and advance to the Third Round here in New York?

Jordan Thompson is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked 59th in the world. The Aussie had an incredibly tough First Round match against Italian Gianluca Mager, winning in five very exhausting sets. He served extremely well and won a high percentage of his service points, but tended to make a lot of unforced errors at key moments. He can be an outstanding player under the right circumstances but tends to be extremely consistent. If he plays well here then he is very capable of causing Aslan Karatsev some issues, but all signs point towards him having a tough day at the office, especially since he will still be feeling the effects of his first match.

Aslan Karatsev is seeded 21st here at the US Open and is ranked #25 on the ATP Tour. He started relatively slowly here in his match against Jaume Munar, before recovering to win in four sets. Munar is no slouch but is far more comfortable on clay and is not someone that should cause the Russian so many problems. He served poorly throughout, serving nine double faults and that is something that needs to be improved if he wants to extend his stay here in New York. His game suits these courts very well, and his power baseline game can be very effective here in New York. If he can start to find his rhythm before the opponents start to get tougher later in the tournament then he has a good chance of going far here. He is the big favorite here against Jordan Thompson but will have to be careful here as the Aussie can be very good on occasion.

This is their first meeting on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a relatively comfortable win for Aslan Karatsev here. He has not hit the heights that many expected after his outstanding start to the season, but he is a much better player than Jordan Thompson and he should win in straight sets. He will need to improve his serve percentages and cut his unforced errors down a big, but ultimately he will have too much firepower for the Aussie to handle, and will advance to the Third Round here at the 2021 US Open without many issues.
