Houston won their opener versus the Jaguars this year, then hit an eight-game losing streak before a win over Tennessee. Houston lost three more games in a row before beating the Jaguars and Chargers in their last pair.
In the Chargers game, the Texans scored a whopping 24 points in the final quarter on the way to a 41-29 victory. QB Davis Mills finished on 254 yards and two scores. Rex Burkhead led the rush with his 149 yards and two TDs from 22 carries.
Over on the 49ers’ side, they notched a 3-4 run over their first seven games. Since then it’s been a 5-3 run for San Francisco. The wins were over the Rams, Jaguars, Vikings, Bengals and Falcons. The losses were to the Cardinals, Seahawks and Titans.
In the Tennessee game last week, the 49ers had a 10-0 lead going into halftime. San Francisco gave up 20 points from there in a 20-17 defeat. QB Jimmy Garoppolo finished on 322 yards, one TD and two picks, while Jeffrey Wilson rushed for 45 yards and a score.
The Texans are 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 after an ATS win and the under is 5-1 in their last six road games. Houston is 7-15 ATS in their last 22 road games versus a team with a winning home record.
Meanwhile, the 49ers are 5-0 ATS in their last five in January and 5-1 ATS in their last six in Week 17. San Francisco is 5-2 ATS in the last seven overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Houston getting in there. The Texans put up a nice offensive effort in the Chargers game, with 437 total yards, 6.8 yards per play and 26 first downs. There are a few things to clean up (like the 10 penalties) but it was a good effort overall.
As for San Francisco, they started pretty strong against Tennessee but couldn’t keep it going. I like the Niners to bounce back and play better here but I think there’s enough room for Houston to cover.
