The San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers clash Friday night in week 1 NFL preseason action from Levi’s Stadium. Green Bay is coming off a 13-4 record overall last year and a first-place division finish. As for San Francisco, they went 10-7 in 2021 on the way to the NFC Championship Game. Green Bay had a pretty successful regular season in 2021, going 13-4 overall on the way to a first-place finish in the NFC North. The Packers became the first team in NFL history to finish three straight seasons with 13 victories or more.
Unfortunately, between those three 13-win seasons the Packers only came up with two playoff victories. The 2021 season came to an abrupt end as well: after a first-round bye, Green Bay lost 13-10 to the 49ers in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs.
Speaking of the 49ers, they’re coming off a solid regular season themselves. San Francisco went 10-7 overall and landed in third place amid the NFC West. That was good enough for a Wild Card berth thanks to a dramatic Week 18 win over the Rams in overtime.
The 49ers were able to do some significant damage in the playoffs despite their Wild Card designation. San Francisco would take out the Cowboys 23-17 in the Wild Card Playoffs, then the aforementioned win over the Packers in the Divisional Playoffs. The NFC Championship was a near-miss loss 20-17 versus the Rams.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with the 49ers. I could realistically go either way here, though. Preseason games are always unpredictable, so this one looks like a coin-flip proposition at best. Both teams retain a nice core group of players and should hit the ground running this season. Green Bay specifically will be missing a few names (Davante Adams is the big one) but that won’t affect anything here. I like this one to be close, with San Francisco bagging a win thanks to a home-field push.
