The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees meet Friday in MLB action from Yankee Stadium. This will be the second installment in a four-game weekend set. In the Friday opener, the Rays bagged a blowout win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays took on the Orioles this week, winning the opener 3-0 before falling in the other pair 4-2 and 2-1. On Thursday versus New York, Tampa Bay scored three runs in both the sixth and eighth innings during an 8-2 win. Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen put up 7.0 clean frames with two hits, no walks and seven Ks.
Trevor Kelley will make the start for the Rays on Friday. In his lone game this year Kelley is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA and two earned on two hits and a walk in 2.0 innings.
New York Yankees
Over on the Yankees’ side, they played the A’s in their last series and took a three-game sweep with wins 7-2, 10-5 and 11-3. On Thursday New York couldn’t quite get the offense going and really lost the handle in the later frames. Domingo German lasted 5.2 innings in the start with one earned on three hits and three walks.
Gerrit Cole will make the start for the Yankees on Friday. Over his eight starts so far Cole is 5-0 with a 2.09 ERA and 58 Ks in 51.2 innings. Cole is 135-71 with a 3.20 ERA in his career over 275 starts.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with the Rays in this one. Cole had a pretty good run going early this month with four earned across a combined 12.2 innings, but he didn’t fare too well against the Rays hitters back on May 7. Cole finished with 5.0 innings, five earned, eight hits and two walks in that one. On Thursday Tampa Bay took a little while to get going, but ultimately out-hit the Yankees 11-4. Three different players had multiple hits in a solid night for the Rays offense. I like Tampa to keep it going in game two.
