The San Diego Padres and the Minnesota Twins meet Wednesday in MLB action from Target Field. This will be the second installment in a three-game series. In the Tuesday opener, the Padres bagged a five-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
San Diego Padres
The Padres played the Dodgers over the weekend and lost two of three games. In the Tuesday opener versus the Twins, San Diego scored three runs in the ninth inning to cap off a 6-1 victory. Starter Michael Wacha lasted 6.0 innings with one earned on three hits and three walks.
For the starter job in the Wednesday game, the Padres will send out Seth Lugo. Over his six starts so far Lugo is 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA and 31 Ks in 33.2 innings. Lugo is 35-26 in his career with a 3.46 ERA over 281 games (44 starts).
Minnesota Twins
Over on the Minnesota side, they took on the Guardians over the weekend and also lost two of three. In the Tuesday matchup the Twins had six hits and three errors in the defeat. Louie Varland lasted 6.0 innings in the start with one earned, five hits and two walks.
Pablo Lopez will take the mound for the start on Wednesday. Across seven starts this year Lopez is 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA and 54 Ks in 43.0 innings. Lopez is 30-33 with a 3.92 ERA over 101 career games.
The Padres are 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series and 16-6 in their last 22 interleague road games versus a right-handed starter. San Diego is 1-6 in the last seven Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Twins are 8-19 in their last 27 versus a team with a winning record and the over is 5-1-1 in the last seven Wednesday games. The over is 5-1 in Minnesota’s last six in game two of a series.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably go with the Padres here. Lugo had a sketchy outing versus the Cubs (5.0 innings; seven hits; four earned) late last month, but two of his past three starts have been solid. In that other pair combined Lugo has three earned on 13 hits and three walks in 12.0 innings. On Tuesday San Diego started slowly but really turned it on over the last few innings. I like the Padres to keep it going in game two.
