The St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox meet Friday in MLB action from Fenway Park. The Cardinals just finished up against the Cubs this week. St. Louis won two of the three games in that series. As for Boston, they played the Braves in a quick two-game set this week, splitting the pair. St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals took on their rival Cubs this week, winning 3-1 Monday and 6-4 Tuesday before a 10-4 loss in the finale. In that Wednesday matchup, Cardinals starter Jordan Montgomery put up 5.0 innings with six earned on seven hits and three walks.
For the starter job in the Friday game one, the Cardinals will send out Adam Wainwright. In his lone start this year Wainwright went 5.0 innings with four earned on eight hits and no walks alongside five strikeouts.
Boston Red Sox
Over on the Red Sox’ side, they lost to the Braves 9-3 in the Tuesday opener, but were able to escape with a split series with a 5-2 Wednesday win. Boston’s Brayan Bello finished with 6.0 innings, two earned, six hits and a walk in the finale.
It’ll be James Paxton on the mound for the Red Sox in the Friday game one. Paxton will be making his Red Sox debut as well as his season debut here. He’s coming off a hamstring injury and spent all of last year rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
The Cardinals are 4-12 in their last 16 overall and 3-7 in their last 10 road games. St. Louis is 7-19 in their last 26 versus a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are 7-1 in the last eight after a win and 9-2 in their last 11 overall. Boston is 19-7 in the last 26 at home.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably take a stab on the Cardinals here. This veteran starter matchup should be fun to watch, though. Paxton has made five minor-league rehab starts and a relief outing this year, pitching to a 6.65 ERA. He’s got a 3.59 ERA in the majors over his career, though. As for Wainwright, he had an up-and-down outing versus the Tigers during his debut. That said, Wainwright should be able to handle the Red Sox lineup if he’s on point. If the Cardinals can get him some run support St. Louis should be in great shape.
