Miami Marlins
The Marlins took on the Mets over the weekend, losing the first pair before a Sunday victory. On Monday versus the Phillies, Miami gave up a whopping 20 hits in a 15-3 blowout loss. Starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara lasted 4.0 innings with nine earned on 10 hits and a walk.
As starter for the Tuesday game it’ll be Miami’s Jesus Luzardo. In his two starts so far Luzardo is 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA. In 12.2 innings he has 15 strikeouts. Luzardo is 14-18 with a 4.41 ERA in his career over 63 games (47 starts).
Philadelphia Phillies
Over on the Philadelphia side, they beat the Reds Friday and Saturday before a 6-4 loss on Sunday. In the Monday game, the Phillies scored five runs in the third inning and four more in both the fifth and sixth innings. Matt Strahm put up 5.0 clean frames in the start with four hits and a walk.
Aaron Nola will take the mound for the starting role on Tuesday. Over his pair of starts this year Nola is 0-1 with a 7.45 ERA. He’s got nine Ks in 9.2 innings. Nola is 78-63 in his career with a 3.63 ERA over 205 starts total.
The Marlins are 17-37 in their last 54 Tuesday games and 12-31 in their last 43 versus the NL East. Miami is 8-20 in their last 28 in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 4-0 in their last four Tuesday games and 22-8 in their last 30 at home. Philly is 1-5 in their last six versus a lefty starter.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to try the Marlins here. Luzardo has done a solid job in his first two starts of the season, posting just one earned over a total of 12.2 innings. Miami coughed up a combined 16 runs over three games in the Mets series, so they’ll need to get Luzardo some help from the bats and the pen in this one. On Monday Miami had a pretty miserable game from Alcantara and Devin Smeltzer, and the offense couldn’t do much with nine team hits. It’s going to take a much better effort from everyone involved here, but I think the Marlins have a decent shot.
