The Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres meet Thursday in MLB action from Petco Park. Milwaukee is coming off a series versus the Diamondbacks this week. After a split in the first two games, in the Wednesday rubber match the Brewers took a four-run loss. As for San Diego, they played the Mets this week. The Padres also split their first pair, then in the finale San Diego lost by three runs. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers took a 3-0 shutout loss to Arizona on Monday but bounced back for a 7-1 win in game two. In the Wednesday game three Milwaukee scored three in the seventh but couldn’t come back in a 7-3 defeat. Starter Janson Junk finished with 4.2 innings, four earned, seven hits and two walks.
Originally, Eric Lauer was going to be the starter for the Brewers in this one. It appears Lauer has been moved to Saturday against Seth Lugo however, so this will probably be more of a bullpen game for Milwaukee.
San Diego Padres
Over on the Padres’ side, they lost to the Mets 5-0 on Monday but then took a 4-2 victory in the Tuesday matchup. In the Wednesday rubber match San Diego had an early lead but couldn’t score after the first inning in a 5-2 loss. Starter Blake Snell gave up four earned on six hits and five walks in 5.0 frames.
In the starting pitcher slot Thursday, the Padres are sending out Nick Martinez. In two starts this year Martinez is 0-1 with a 6.17 ERA. He’s got nine Ks in 11.2 innings total. Martinez is 21-35 with a 4.54 career ERA in 137 games (80 starts).
The Brewers are 5-2 in their last seven versus the NL West and the under is 6-0 in their last six Thursday games. The under is 6-2 in Milwaukee’s last eight in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Padres are 1-10 in their last 11 Thursday games and 1-4 in their last five in game one of a series. The over is 5-1-1 in San Diego’s last seven in game one of a series.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll take a stab on the Brewers here. Martinez has struggled a bit in his first two starts. He’s coming off four earned in 4.2 innings in a no-decision in Atlanta on April 7. On Wednesday Milwaukee fell into a quick 5-0 hole and ended up giving up 12 hits to the Diamondbacks. The Brewers are going to need a good performance from their pen in this one, but if all goes well I think Milwaukee will have some opportunities to pull off the win.
