The Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres meet Wednesday in MLB action from Petco Park. This will be the final installment in a three-game series. The Braves took a shutout win on Monday, then in game two Atlanta kept it up with another victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves posted both their runs in the first inning Monday and were able to hang on for a 2-0 win. On Tuesday Atlanta posted six runs in the final two frames in an 8-1 victory. Spencer Strider put up 6.0 clean frames in the start with one hit, three walks and nine Ks.
For the starter gig in the Wednesday game, the Braves will send out Charlie Morton. In his three starts so far Morton is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 16.1 total innings. Morton is 118-102 with a 4.03 ERA in 326 career games (325 starts).
San Diego Padres
Over on the Padres’ side, they couldn’t get anything going on six team hits in the Monday opener. In game two San Diego had just four hits in the loss. Starter Blake Snell went 5.0 innings with two earned, three hits and three walks.
It’ll be Nick Martinez in the Wednesday start for the Padres. Over three starts so far Martinez is 0-1 with a 5.60 ERA. He’s got 11 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. Martinez holds a career ERA of 4.54 with a 21-35 record in 138 games (81 starts).
The Braves are 58-14 in the last 72 games versus a team with a losing record and 51-22 in their last 73 overall. Atlanta is 60-28 in the last 88 versus a right-handed starter.
Meanwhile, the Padres are 5-1 in their last six in game three of a series and the under is 6-2 in their last eight overall. San Diego is 2-5 in their last seven versus a right-handed starter.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with the Braves here. Morton has had some sketchy moments through his first three starts this year, but he’s kept Atlanta in games while he’s out there. Morton is coming off two earned on six hits and two walks in 6.0 frames in a win over KC, and he should keep it up here if all goes well. On Tuesday Atlanta started relatively strong but the finish was strong. I like the Braves to keep it going here and make it a sweep.
