The Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins meet Sunday in MLB action from Marlins Park. This will be the finale in a three-game weekend series. The Marlins took a close win Friday in the opener, then in game two Miami bagged another victory in another close outcome. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs had a brief 2-1 lead in the Friday opener of this series but ultimately fell 3-2 despite a 10-8 hits advantage. On Saturday Chicago coughed up five runs in the first inning and ultimately fell 7-6. Starting pitcher Caleb Kilian put up 3.1 frames with 10 hits, seven earned and two walks.
For the starter job in the Sunday game the Cubs will go with Justin Steele. This year Steele is 4-0 with a 1.19 ERA and 29 Ks in 30.1 innings over five starts. Steele is 12-11 with a 3.18 ERA in his career over 49 games (38 starts).
Miami Marlins
Over on the Marlins’ side, they bagged the victory Friday on a Jean Segura walk-off single. In Saturday’s game two, Miami out-hit the Cubs 12-9 along the way to the victory. Edward Cabrera lasted 5.0 innings in the starting role with three hits, two earned, five walks and 12 Ks.
Bryan Hoeing will take the start for the Sunday finale. In his lone start this year Hoeing lasted 3.2 innings with four earned, six hits, two walks and two Ks in a loss. He’s 1-2 with an 11.57 ERA over nine games (two starts) in his career.
The Cubs are 18-5 in their last 23 versus the NL East and 3-11 in their last 14 Sunday games. The over is 5-1 in Chicago’s last six Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are 3-9 in their last 12 Sunday games and 0-4 in their last four in game three of a series. The under is 17-6-3 in Miami’s last 26 at home.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to stay with the Cubs. Steele is having a great year so far, and he should notch another good outing here. Over his last three starts, Steele is 3-0 with 18.1 innings, three earned, 10 hits and five walks. On Saturday the Cubs played from behind for nearly the entire game but they did show some late life with the bats. Chicago just needs to rally the offense (and bullpen) behind Steele and they should be in good shape to stave off the weekend sweep.
