Los Angeles Angels
The Angels started out their season with a series versus the Athletics. Los Angeles won two of three in that set. On Monday versus Seattle, the Angels bagged 11 team hits on the way to a 7-3 win. Starter Reid Detmers managed 4.2 innings with two earned on four hits and three walks.
For the Tuesday starter job, the Angels will send out Jose Suarez. Over 22 games (20 starts) last year Suarez went 8-8 with a 3.96 ERA. In 109.0 innings he had 103 Ks. Suarez holds a career record of 18-24 with a 5.05 ERA in 66 games (51 starts).
Seattle Mariners
Over on the Mariners’ side, their first series came versus the Guardians. Seattle lost three of those four games. On Monday the Mariners were only down 4-3 at the end of the fifth inning but couldn’t score from there. George Kirby put up 4.1 innings in the start with four earned, nine hits and a walk.
Luis Castillo will get the call for the start on Tuesday. In his lone appearance so far this year Castillo has 6.0 clean innings with six Ks, one hit and a 0.17 WHIP. Castillo went 8-6 last year with a 2.99 ERA in 25 starts.
The Angels are 9-4 in the last 13 overall and 5-11 in their last 16 road games. The under is 4-0 in LA’s last four Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Mariners are 13-4 in their last 17 Tuesday games and 26-10 in their last 36 in game two of a series. The under is 13-4 in Seattle’s last 17 in game two of a series.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going with the Mariners here. Castillo was great in his first appearance this year—that one ended up being a 3-0 win over the Guardians on Thursday but he had to settle for the no-decision after a slow offensive start. On Monday Seattle had some trouble staying consistent offensively. That said, there were a few sparks here and there. The Mariners have given up six or more runs in three of their last four games, so there’s plenty of room for improvement on the mound. Seattle has scored three or more runs in four of five games so far however; the offense is performing well in comparison. If the pitching staff can tighten the screws in game two, I can see Seattle getting back on track.
