The Seattle Mariners and the Chicago Cubs meet Wednesday in MLB action from Wrigley Field. This will be the finale in a three-game series this week. The Cubs eked out an extra-innings walk-off victory in the Monday opener, then on Tuesday Chicago kept it up with a five-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners tied up the Monday game in the ninth inning, but ended up losing 3-2 in 10 frames. On Tuesday Seattle had a 7-1 lead at the end of the second but coughed up eight runs in the next inning during a wild 14-9 loss. Starter Chris Flexen posted 2.1 frames with eight earned on 10 hits and two walks.
For the starter job in the Wednesday finale the Mariners will send out Logan Gilbert. Over his two starts so far Gilbert is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA. He has 13 strikeouts in 10.0 innings of work. Gilbert is 19-12 with a 3.77 career ERA in 58 starts.
Chicago Cubs
Over on the Chicago side, they won Monday’s game on a line-drive single from Nico Hoerner in the 10th inning. On Tuesday the Cubs added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth on the way to 18 team hits. Hayden Wesneski lasted 1.1 innings on five hits, two earned and four walks.
Marcus Stroman will take the mound for the Cubs on Wednesday. In his pair of starts this year Stroman is 2-0 with a clean ERA and 14 strikeouts in 12.0 innings. Stroman carries a 69-67 career record with a 3.58 ERA in 206 games (200 starts).
The Mariners are 12-4 in their last 16 Wednesday games and 9-4 in their last 13 interleague games. Seattle is 0-4 in their last four in game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are 4-0 in their last four Wednesday games and 13-6 in their last 19 versus a right-handed starter. Chicago is 7-19 in their last 26 interleague home games.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to stay with Chicago. Stroman has been great so far in his first two starts. He’s got zero earned on five hits and six walks over 12.0 innings—that’s 6.0 frames in each of his victories. On Tuesday the Cubs came alive offensively after some early troubles and ended up with an odd victory. Patrick Wisdom was the only batter without a hit, but he ended up with two walks and a run. It was a nice across-the-board effort to aid the pitching staff. Hopefully the Cubs won’t need that many runs in the finale.
