The Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Saturday in MLB action from Busch Stadium. This will be the second installment in a three-game weekend series. On Friday in game one the Tigers eked out a close victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers played the Mets this week, bagging a sweep with wins 6-5, 8-1 and 2-0. On Friday versus the Cardinals, Detroit blew an early 2-0 lead but came back with three seventh-inning runs in a 5-4 win. Starter Matthew Boyd finished with 6.0 innings, three earned, five hits and no walks.
It’ll be Spencer Turnbull in the starter role for the Tigers on Saturday. In his six starts this year Turnbull is 1-4 with a 6.84 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 26.1 innings. Turnbull has a career record of 12-29 with a 4.47 ERA in 60 games (59 starts).
St. Louis Cardinals
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they had trouble with the Angels this week and fell in all three games of that series. On Friday versus Detroit, St. Louis out-hit the Tigers 13-9 in the defeat. Jordan Montgomery lasted 6.0 innings in the start with six hits, two earned and one walk.
Adam Wainwright will make his season debut on Saturday for the Cardinals. In his career Wainwright is 195-117 with a 3.38 ERA across 457 games (390 starts).
The Tigers are 5-13 in their last 18 road games and 5-1 in their last six in game two of a series. The over is 5-1 in Detroit’s last six Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 20-9 in their last 29 Saturday games and 0-5 in their last five in game two of a series. St. Louis is 8-21 in their last 29 overall.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll take a stab on the Cardinals. The line’s probably too thick to mess with, though. St. Louis could certainly use a healthy Wainwright these days, and it’s a good sign to see him coming back from an injury suffered in the World Baseball Classic. Granted, Wainwright probably won’t be out there for long, but if he can set the table for the pen the Cardinals should be in good shape down the stretch. On Friday St. Louis had a pretty solid offensive night despite the loss. Four different players had multiple hits. The Cardinals are going to need a much better effort from the pitching staff in game two, and I think they’ll get it.
