The Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Angels meet Sunday in MLB action from Angel Stadium. This will be the finale in a three-game weekend series. Toronto took a one-run win in the Friday opener of this set, then on Saturday the Angels tied it up with a four-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto out-hit the Angels 9-3 in the Friday opener, hanging on for the 4-3 win despite three errors. On Saturday Toronto had 10 hits and two errors in a 9-5 loss. Starting pitcher Jose Berrios put up 4.0 innings, four earned, six hits and a walk.
Starting pitcher for Sunday’s finale will be Yusei Kikuchi. In his first start of the year Kikuchi put up a win with 5.0 innings, three hits, one walk and one earned. He’s 22-31 in his career with a 4.98 ERA in 103 games (91 starts).
Los Angeles Angels
Over on the Angels’ side, they had a 3-1 lead over Toronto at one point in the Friday game but couldn’t hold on. In the Saturday matchup LA came back from a 4-0 deficit with seven runs across three innings. Tyler Anderson put up 4.2 innings, five earned, seven hits and two walks.
Reid Detmers will make the start for the Angels on Sunday. In his opening start this year Detmers had 4.2 innings with two earned on four hits and three walks. He’s 8-9 over 31 starts in his career with a 4.26 ERA.
The Blue Jays are 22-8 in their last 30 on grass and 3-10 in their last 13 versus the AL West. Toronto is 4-10 in their last 14 versus a lefty starter.
Meanwhile, the Angels are 4-0 in their last four Sunday games and 6-0 in their last six at home versus a lefty starter. LA is 6-21 in their last 27 versus the AL East.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll try the Blue Jays in this one. Kikuchi did well in his first start of the season, bagging a road win over Kansas City on April 4 with five solid innings. As for Detmers, he wasn’t terrible in his debut against the Mariners but didn’t make it through five innings. On Saturday the Blue Jays didn’t have the greatest outing from the pitching staff, but they got some nice offensive performances from their key hitters. Toronto is going to need a good defensive bounce-back to take this rubber match, and I think they’ll get there.
