Ohio kicked off their year with a big loss to Syracuse 29-9, but then performed better in week two with a 28-26 loss to Duquesne. The Bobcats lost to Louisiana 49-14 and Northwestern 35-6 before their first win of the year; 34-17 over Akron on October 2.
Last weekend versus Central Michigan, the Bobcats scored in every quarter but couldn’t keep up in a rough 30-27 loss. Armani Rogers passed for 190 yards on a 13-of-18 line, and De’Montre Tuggle led the rushing attack on 83 yards and a score from 19 carries.
Over on the Bulls’ side, they drilled Wagner 69-7 in their opener this year, but then fell 28-3 to Nebraska and 28-25 to Coastal Carolina in their next pair. Buffalo then beat Old Dominion 35-34 then lost the next week to Western Michigan 24-17.
In the Kent State game, the Bulls scored 28 points in a wild third quarter but were blanked from there in a 48-38 defeat. Kyle Vantrease put up 229 yards, one TD and two picks on 23-of-44 passing. Dylan McDuffie led the rush with 87 yards and a score off 10 carries.
The Bobcats are 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 in October. Ohio is 1-4 ATS in their last five on the road.
Meanwhile, the Bulls are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss and 7-1-1 ATS in their last nine in October. Buffalo is 6-2 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up loss.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Buffalo, but this is one I’m not going near. The Bulls had a pretty solid offensive effort in their comeback attempt last weekend, notching 549 yards, 36 first downs and 5.5 yards per play. Buffalo was overwhelmed on the other side by Kent State’s 633 yards, however.
As for Ohio, they gave up 461 yards and 6.5 yards per play on average to Central Michigan but probably still could have pulled out a great win if not for a few key plays. This should be an interesting matchup but I like the Bulls a little better on a cover.
