The Memphis Tigers and Temple Owls clash Saturday in week 5 AAC college football action from Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Temple is fresh off a matchup versus UMass. In that one the Owls took a shutout win. As for Memphis, they played North Texas over the weekend. The Tigers would go on to win by 10 points. Temple didn’t have any luck in their opener versus Duke, falling 30-0 in a blowout on September 2. The Owls managed to get into the win column with a 30-14 result versus Lafayette in game two, but then took a 16-14 loss to Rutgers on September 17.
In game four versus UMass, the Owls only scored seven points in the first half but eventually went on to the 28-0 win. Quarterback EJ Warner managed 173 yards with two scores and two picks. Quincy Patterson led the rush with 52 yards and a TD on 10 carries.
Over on the Memphis side, they were outmatched by Mississippi State in their opener and ultimately fell 49-23. The Tigers managed a win over Navy 37-13 in the next game. In their third outing of the year, Memphis took another win, this time 44-32 over Arkansas State.
Matched up against North Texas over the weekend, the Tigers held a 20-13 lead at the half and were able to hang on for the 44-34 win. QB Seth Henigan finished with 141 yards, two scores and a pick. Brandon Thomas went 84 yards with two scores on 15 carries.
PICK: I’m staying with Temple, but probably not going near this one. Both teams are coming off victories, but neither was pretty. The Owls posted a tepid 313 yards of offense versus UMass, along with four turnovers and a sketchy 3-of-11 rate on third-down tries. As for Memphis, they were out-gained 473-334 in yardage and had a rough 2-of-12 rate on third downs themselves. Sure it’s a W for both teams, but they’re going to face some stiffer competition in this one. Should be a solid matchup, and I think it’ll be reasonably close most of the way.
