VMI vs UNC Wilmington 3/20/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The UNC Wilmington Seahawks and the VMI Keydets meet Sunday in CBI Tournament college basketball action from Ocean Center. UNC Wilmington is sitting at 23-9 overall. The Seahawks lost to Delaware in their last outing. As for VMI, they’re sitting at 16-15 and coming off a loss to Wofford. UNC Wilmington started out the year on an ugly 3-5 clip, but quickly recovered after that with 12 straight wins. The Seahawks were on a five-game win streak going into the conference tournament matchup versus Delaware. UNCW ended up taking a tough loss in that one. 

The Seahawks had a solid first half in the Delaware game, going into the break with a 34-30 lead. UNCW was outscored 21-29 from there in a difficult 59-55 defeat. Jaylen Sims led the team with his 18 points and four rebounds in the loss. 

Over on the VMI side, they’ve been quite the mixed bag the season. The Keydets have had several isolated stellar runs this year, but they’ve also had some sketchy losing stretches as well. VMI has a three-game losing streak going, the latest coming to Wofford on March 5. 

In the conference tourney matchup versus Wofford, the Keydets were up by one point going into the second half. VMI was outscored 30-33 from there in a 68-66 defeat. Jake Stephens was the top team scorer with his 23 points, three assists and five boards. 

The Keydets are 9-21 ATS in their last 30 neutral-site games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Sunday games. VMI is 16-7 ATS in their last 23 overall.
Meanwhile, the Seahawks are 18-5 ATS in their last 23 overall and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after a straight-up loss. The under is 5-0 in UNCW’s last five overall. 

PICK: I’m going to stay with UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks had a bad second half against Delaware in their last outing, but otherwise they’ve done fairly well recently—in the win column at least. UNCW has scored less than 70 points in four of their last five games, but they’ve also held opponents to 63 points or fewer in five straight outings. 

It’ll be interesting to see what the UNC Wilmington defense can do against VMI. The Keydets have hit 72 or more points in nine of their last 10 outings, so they’re not too bad when it comes to scoring. That said, I think the Seahawks can hold them back well enough to cover/win. Should be a good matchup.
