Samford started off on a nice 10-2 clip this year, losing to only San Francisco and Belmont. It’s been a 1-4 run since then however. The win was versus Western Carolina; the losses have come to Furman, Mercer, Wofford and East Tennessee State.
In Saturday’s matchup versus East Tennessee State, Samford was outscored 42-39 in the second half during a tough 88-85 loss. Both Logan Dye and Jaden Campbell scored 20 points apiece, combining for nine rebounds.
Over on the VMI side, their year began on a sketchy 3-4 run. The Keydets were able to even it out with a 6-1 stretch after that, however. After three losses to East Tennessee State, UNC Greensboro and Mercer, VMI won their last game over the Citadel.
In the Bulldogs matchup over the weekend, the Keydets managed a 46-41 edge by halftime and were able to hang on for the 90-85 win. Jake Stephens led the team with his 20 points, 21 rebounds and five assists during the victory.
The Keydets are 11-3 ATS in the last 14 at home and 6-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. VMI is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 overall.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in the last five after a straight-up loss and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS loss. The over is 22-8 in Samford’s last 30 Thursday games.
PICK: I’m going to try VMI here. The Keydets have been pretty spotty over this 1-3 stretch, but the good news is that they’re still scoring fairly well. VMI has hit 70 or more points in six of their last seven games. They’ve gone just 3-4 in that time, though.
As for Samford, they’ve hit 80 or more in three of their last four games so this one could turn into a high-scoring affair as well. Should be a fun matchup, and I like VMI to eke out the cover.
