The Northern Iowa Panthers and the UIC Flames meet Saturday in college basketball action from UIC Pavilion. Northern Iowa is 10-9 on the season so far. The Panthers beat Illinois State in their last game. As for UIC, they’re 9-11 this year following a Tuesday loss to Valparaiso. Northern Iowa Panthers
Northern Iowa went 6-8 over their first 14 games, beating Wartburg, Northern Illinois, Evansville, Towson, St. Bonaventure and Illinois State. The Panthers are 4-1 in their last five with a lone loss to Belmont last weekend.
In the Wednesday game versus Illinois State, the Panthers were up 33-30 by the break. Northern Iowa was outscored in the second half but hung on for the win 65-63. Trey Campbell led the team on 20 points with five rebounds.
UIC Flames
Over on the UIC side, they were 9-5 through 14 games with losses to Loyola IL, Fordham, Missouri State, Drake and Northwestern. The Flames have since fallen to Bradley, Belmont, Indiana State, Drake, Murray State and Valparaiso.
In the Valparaiso game on Tuesday, the Flames trailed 36-33 going into the second half. UIC was outscored 40-33 from there and lost 76-66. Toby Okani led the team with his 29 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to stick with Northern Iowa in this one. The Panthers have scored 65 or more points in each installment during this 5-1 stretch, and outside of a couple close calls the team is playing fairly well. UIC should be in Northern Iowa’s wheelhouse. Speaking of the Flames, they’re on an ugly 0-6 run right now featuring 66 or fewer points in four of the six games. I don’t think UIC will score too badly here but I also don’t think they’ll cover.
