The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the UAB Blazers meet Tuesday in NIT college basketball action from Bartow Arena. Southern Miss is 25-7 overall this year. The Eagles lost to South Alabama in their Sun Belt Tournament matchup. As for UAB, they’re 25-9 overall after a Conference USA Tournament loss to Florida Atlantic. Southern Miss Golden Eagles
Southern Miss closed out the regular season on a nice run, going 11-2 over their final 13 outings. After a 2-2 stretch to end the year (losing to South Alabama and Old Dominion), the Golden Eagles got a one-seed in the Sun Belt Tournament.
Matched up against South Alabama in the conference tourney, the Eagles were up 27-26 going into the break. Southern Miss hit a 52-34 deficit from there however and lost 78-61. Denijay Harris doubled on 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Felipe Haase posted 18 points.
UAB Blazers
Over on the UAB side, their regular season ended with a solid 23-8 record. The Blazers finished off the year with a six-game win streak, then beat Rice 87-60 in the first game of the Conference USA Tournament. UAB followed that up with a 76-69 win over North Texas.
In the Florida Atlantic game back on Saturday, UAB had trouble from the start and took a 46-27 deficit into the break. The Blazers were outscored 32-29 in the second and lost 78-56. Jordan Walker was the team’s high scorer on 18 points in 34 minutes.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably lean toward UAB in this one. It’ll be a fun matchup, though. The Blazers really need a good bounce-back after a rough game versus FAU. UAB shot just 31.7 percent from the field in that one and got out-rebounded 47-30. Still, the Blazers had a nice eight-game win streak going prior to that and were scoring well. As for Southern Miss, they’re a sketchy 3-3 over their last six games with 64 or fewer points in each of the losses. If UAB can control the tempo in this one and maintain form throughout I think they’ll be fine. Should be a competitive game.
