The VMI Keydets and the Citadel Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from McAllister Field House. VMI enters this one at 9-8 so far. The Keydets lost to Mercer in their last game. VMI managed a 9-5 run over their first 14 games this year, falling to Presbyterian (twice, Marist, New Orleans and Wake Forest in that time. Since then it’s been three straight losses to East Tennessee State, UNC Greensboro and Mercer.
In the Mercer game, VMI was down 52-34 at the break. The Keydets posted 57 points from there but still lost 97-91. Jake Stephens was the leading scorer on 34 points, and Sean Conway added 18 points with two boards.
Over on the Bulldogs’ side, they got off to a 6-3 start with losses to only Presbyterian, Duke and UNC Asheville. After losses to SC State, Manhattan, Western Carolina and Chattanooga, the Citadel managed another win Thursday versus UNC Greensboro.
Matched up against UNC Greensboro, the Citadel took a 33-18 deficit into halftime. The Bulldogs scored 56 points in the second half for a comeback 74-67 win. Leading the way was Hayden Brown with 24 points and 15 rebounds.
The Bulldogs are 6-2 ATS in the last eight at home and 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games. The Citadel is 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Keydets are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games and 7-2 ATS in their last nine overall. VMI is 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Citadel. Probably not going near this one, though. The Bulldogs had a good effort Thursday versus a decent UNC Greensboro team. The Citadel shot 45.3 percent from the field with 35 rebounds and 12 team assists. It was a much-needed win. The Bulldogs are going to need to keep the offensive momentum going to keep VMI at bay, however. The Keydets have scored 70 or more points in five of their last six appearances. This should be a competitive game if nothing else.
