Auburn Tigers
The Tigers kicked off the year on a 13-3 run through 16 games, losing to Memphis, USC and Georgia in that time. Auburn went 3-2 over the next five games, beating Mississippi State, LSU and South Carolina before losses to Texas A&M and West Virginia.
In the Wednesday matchup versus Georgia, the Tigers stormed out to a 42-24 lead at halftime. Auburn kept it up with a 52-49 run in the second half and won it 94-73. Allen Flanigan posted 22 points and Johni Broome doubled on 19 points and 18 rebounds.
Tennessee Volunteers
Over on the Tennessee side, they were 14-2 after 16 games with losses to only Colorado and Arizona. The Volunteers went 4-1 over the next five outings with wins over Mississippi State, LSU, Georgia and Texas after a loss to Kentucky.
Matched up against Florida on Wednesday, the Volunteers were outscored 27-21 by the break. Tennessee didn’t end up getting any closer in the second on a 40-33 deficit and lost 67-54. Zakai Zeigler topped the team on 15 points in the defeat.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with Tennessee. A bit of the luster has worn off of this one after the loss to Florida on Wednesday, however. The Volunteers shot a dismal 27.9 percent from the floor and 5-of-25 from 3-point range in that game, but did out-rebound the Gators 43-36 (18-5 offensive). It was the first time in five games that Tennessee had failed to hit 70 points, but if they can get the scoreboard going early in this one I think they’ll be okay. As for Auburn, they’re coming off a dominant win over Georgia and will have plenty of confidence on Saturday. A good start from Tennessee will help rid their thoughts of the bad loss this week, though.
