Northeastern Huskies
The Huskies were 8-11 through their first 19 games this year, then hit a 2-6 stretch in January/February. Those losses came versus UNC Wilmington, William & Mary, Towson, Stony Brook, Charleston and Hofstra. Since then it’s been a 2-2 run with losses to Delaware and Drexel.
In the Drexel matchup on Saturday, the Huskies were drilled 40-27 in the first half alone. Northeastern didn’t end up gaining any ground on a 33-32 run from there and lost 73-59. Chris Doherty put up 18 points with four rebounds in 32 minutes as the team’s high scorer.
Stony Brook Seawolves
Over on the Stony Brook side, they were 9-10 in their first 19 games then won five of the next seven over Monmouth, UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Elon and Hampton. The Seawolves are 3-2 in their last five with wins over North Carolina A&T, William & Mary and Delaware in that time.
Matched up against Delaware over the weekend, the Seawolves didn’t have a ton of issues. Stony Brook was up 38-29 by halftime, then hit a 41-27 run the rest of the way for a 79-56 outcome. Aaron Clarke led the Seawolves on 19 points with four rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE NORTHEASTERN VS STONY BROOK PREDICTION
I’ll lean toward Stony Brook here. The Seawolves powered past a decent Delaware team in their last outing, hitting a nice 50 percent from the field and 52.6 percent from 3-point range with just six turnovers. Stony Brook has scored 75 or more options in four straight games—a 3-1 stretch for them.
In the last meeting between these teams back on February 3, Stony Brook pulled off a 59-55 home win. Both teams shot below 40 percent in that one and had similar rebounding numbers with 13 turnovers each. The Seawolves are a better offensive team than that—as they’ve shown lately—so I like Stony Brook to rally and power out a cover in this tournament matchup.
