The VMI Keydets and the Richmond Spiders meet in college basketball action from the Robins Center on Monday night.

The VMI Keydets will be out to build on a decent 2021-22 season, finishing at 16-16 overall, including a 9-9 mark in SoCon play to finish in the 5th seed. The Keydets’ SoCon tournament was short-lived, as VMI would fall to Wofford in the quarterfinals. VMI got an invite to the CBI, but lost in the first round to UNC-Wilmington. The Keydets lose four double-digit scorers from last year’s group, including Jake Stephens (19.6 PPG, 9 RPG), Trey Bonham (13.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4 APG), Kamdyn Curfman (15.6 PPG) and Honor Huff (10 PPG) while Sean Conway is the top-returning scorer after putting up 7.6 PPG and 5.6 RPG last season. It’ll definitely be a year full of turnover for VMI to say the least.

The Richmond Spiders will look to build on a solid 2021-22 season, finishing the year at 24-13 overall including a 10-8 mark in A-10 conference play. The Spiders would take out Rhode Island, VCU, Dayton and Davidson on the way to the A-10 title and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Richmond came into the big dance as a 12-seed, upsetting Iowa in the first round before falling to Providence in the second round. The Richmond roster will undergo a bit of an overhaul themselves, losing a big chunk of the roster that’s been there for the better part of the last few years, including Grant Golden (13.7 PPG, 6 RPG), Jacob Gilyard (13.3 PPG, 5.4 APG, 2.9 SPG), Nathan Cayo and Nick Sherod. Tyler Burton is Richmond’s top returning scorer, logging 16.1 PPG and 7.7 RPG, while Neal Quinn and Jason Roche are a nice pair of gets from the transfer portal, with Quinn logging 14.7 PPG and 7.4 RPG for Lafayette while Roche had 13.2 PPG for the Citadel last year. It’ll be a new look Richmond team, but a team that’s still expected to contend in the A-10 this season.

VMI is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 4-18 ATS in their last 22 Monday games while the over is 8-2 in their last 10 road games. Richmond is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-12 ATS in their last 17 Monday games while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 home games.

If I’m being completely honest, I want to take a wait and see approach before confidently backing either of these teams, that’s why I’m on the under here. Both sides just lost so much from their respective teams, especially Richmond who had that same starting lineup for the better part of the last four years. I think there’s going to be a big feeling out process going down here so give me the under.
