UMKC lost three straight games to kick off the season before finding a win over Calvary. The Kangaroos have gone 3-4 since then, losing to Kansas State, Florida Gulf Coast, SIUE and Idaho State with wins otherwise over Toledo, Indiana State and Lindenwood.
In the Lindenwood matchup back on Saturday, the Kangaroos were up 25-17 by halftime. UMKC scored 36 second-half points on the way to a 61-47 win. Leading scorer RayQuawndis Mitchell put up 27 points with seven rebounds.
Over on the Oklahoma side, they lost their opener to Sam Houston 52-51. The Sooners bounced back with six straight wins over AR-Pine Bluff, UNC Wilmington, South Alabama, Nebraska, Seton Hall and Ole Miss.
The Sooners took their second loss of the year on Saturday versus Villanova. Oklahoma had a two-point edge at the break but eventually lost 70-66 after giving up 40 second-half points. Grant Sherfield led the team on 21 points with four rebounds and four assists.
PICK: I’ll probably stay with Oklahoma. Also probably not touching it, though; the line’s a little too thick to play around with. On Saturday the Sooners didn’t have a great second half against a Villanova team that they probably should have beaten. Oklahoma shot 48 percent from the floor and had a dominant 31-19 rebounding advantage, but also allowed the Wildcats to shoot 56.8 percent from the field on the other side. The Sooners haven’t been putting up big points totals this year; they’ve hit 70 points just twice so far.
That said, the Sooners shouldn’t have much trouble scoring against UMKC. Oklahoma will most certainly win if they play to their capabilities; the only question is by how much. I think the Sooners will do well enough to cover in a nice bounce-back effort.
