Fairfield had a forgettable campaign in 2021-22, going 15-18 overall. The Stags finished 8-12 in Metro Atlantic Athletic games, putting the team on the lower side of the standings. Fairfield would ultimately fall to Saint Peter’s in the conference tournament.
In their first action of the season Monday versus Wake Forest, the Stags were outscored 32-25 in the first half. Fairfield didn’t get much better from there in a 71-59 loss. Caleb Fields led the team on 14 points and four rebounds.
Over on the New Hampshire side, they were barely over .500 last year at 15-13 overall and 10-8 in America East Conference play. The Wildcats finished in fourth place in the standings, behind Vermont, UMBC and Stony Brook.
The Wildcats opened up their year on Monday versus Brandeis and didn’t have too much trouble. New Hampshire finished strong with 40 second-half points in a 79-47 win. Clarence Daniels managed a double-double (18 points; 10 boards) as did Matthew Herasme (11 points; 12 rebounds).
PICK: I’ll probably stay with New Hampshire here. Not going near it, though. The Wildcats weren’t exactly up against elite competition in their opener, but they got the job done with a pretty well-rounded effort from much of the roster. As for Fairfield, they were outmatched by a Wake Forest team that shot a tepid 39.1 percent from the field in their opener. This should be a more comparable matchup on both sides.
