The American Eagles and the Marist Red Foxes meet Wednesday in college basketball action from McCann Arena. American managed to go 10-22 overall last season, landing in last place in the Patriot League standings. As for Marist, they went 14-16 overall in 2021-22 and finished near the middle of the MAAC. American had a forgettable campaign in 2021-22, going 10-22 overall with a 5-13 record in the Patriot League games. That would leave the Eagles in last place in the standings at season’s end, just behind Bucknell (who had the same conference record).
The Eagles won their first couple of games last year, but an early seven-game losing streak put them under .500 for good. American managed to beat Holy Cross in their first game of the conference tourney, but they fell to Navy in the next game.
Over on the Marist side, they were a pretty middle-of-the-road team in the MAAC last year with a 14-16 overall record and a 9-11 conference mark. The Foxes finished in sixth place in the standings behind Iona, St. Peter’s, Siena, Monmouth and Niagara.
Marist took a while to gel last year, and it was February before the team won more than two consecutive outings. After losing their final two regular-season games, the Foxes were eliminated by Quinnipiac in the first game of the conference tourney.
PICK: I might take a stab on American here. This is probably one to stay away from however, at least until we see these teams on the court for a couple of games. In any case, American returns four of their starters from last season, including last year’s All-Patriot League Rookie selection Elijah Stephens. In 2021-22 Stephens made 13 starts and led the team with 2.7 assists per game. I like the returning group to help the Eagles cover here, but realistically I’m not going near it.
