Vanderbilt Commodores
Vanderbilt managed a .500 run over their first 24 games, going 12-12 in that time. The Commodores would then hit a 6-1 stretch with wins over Florida, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida again, Kentucky and Mississippi State.
On Thursday in the tournament matchup versus LSU, Vanderbilt hit a 37-29 first-half advantage. The Commodores scored another 40 points from there and won 77-68. Leading the way was Tyrin Lawrence on 22 points, and Jordan Wright doubled with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Kentucky Wildcats
Over on the Kentucky side, they got through their first 24 games with a 16-8 record. The Wildcats finished off the year on a 5-2 run, beating Mississippi State, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn and Arkansas with losses otherwise to Georgia and Vanderbilt.
In the Arkansas matchup on Saturday, the Wildcats were up 40-36 in the locker room. Kentucky hit a 48-43 advantage in the second half and took a win 88-79. Antonio Reeves was tops on 37 points, and Jacob Toppin added 21 points with four rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I might try Vanderbilt here. The Commodores are a nice 9-1 over their last 10 games, and they’ve scored 68 or more points in five straight outings. Vanderbilt put up 46.4 percent shooting from the floor in the tournament win over LSU as well. As for Kentucky, they’re doing well over this current 5-1 stretch. The Wildcats have scored 66 or more points in all six of those outings and should post a pretty decent total here as well. These teams have split their two matchups this season, with the road team winning each time. Kentucky got a 69-53 victory on January 24, then Vanderbilt got theirs 68-66 on March 1. This one should also be a close, competitive matchup. I’m leaning Commodores but you could make a case either way.
