Sacramento State had a tough opener versus UCLA and ended up falling 76-50. The Hornets would bounce back for victories in their next three however, taking out UC San Diego, Denver and UC Merced in that span.
In Tuesday’s matchup versus UC Davis, the Hornets fell back into the loss column. Sacramento State was up 40-33 at halftime but took a 49-31 deficit in the second half for an 82-71 loss. Zach Chappell put up 19 points to lead the way.
Over on the Hawaii side, they managed a pair of wins in their first two games this year. Those came courtesy of MS Valley and Eastern Washington. Next came a loss to Yale 62-59 in game three for Hawaii’s first defeat of the season.
Back on Saturday versus Hawaii Pacific, the Warriors were able to bag another win. Hawaii scored 43 points in the first half on the way to a 79-55 victory. Kamaka Hepa doubled up with 13 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.
PICK: I’ll probably stick with Hawaii. The Warriors have just the one loss versus Yale so far; otherwise the team has done pretty well. Hawaii has 71 or more points in three of four games and should match up pretty well with Sacramento State. As for the Hornets, they’ve been up and down this year. Sac State has 65 or fewer points in three of five games, so they’re going to need to keep the scoring up in order to keep pace in this one.
