UAB Blazers
At the 22-game mark this season, UAB had a reasonable 15-7 record overall. The Blazers have since gone a nice 7-1, taking out Florida Atlantic, FIU, Middle Tennessee, UTEP, UTSA, Rice and Western Kentucky with a lone loss to North Texas otherwise.
In the Western Kentucky game back on Saturday, the Blazers took a 33-29 edge into the second half. UAB hit a 39-31 run to finish off the game with a 72-60 victory. Eric Gaines scored 17 and Trey Jemison doubled on 10 points and 10 boards.
Charlotte 49ers
Over on the Charlotte side, they managed a 12-10 run through their first 22 outings this year. The 49ers went 5-2 over their next seven with wins over UTEP, Western Kentucky, LA Tech, North Texas and Rice mixed with losses to Florida Atlantic and North Texas.
On Thursday versus UTSA, Charlotte was down 38-37 going into the second half. The 49ers hit a 40-36 deficit from there and lost 78-73. Aly Khalifa led the team in the loss with 27 points, and Brice Williams doubled up on 20 points and 11 rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stick with UAB in this one. I could probably go either way here, though. The Blazers are on a nice five-game win streak right now and looking good offensively. UAB has scored 70 or more points in nine straight outings. These teams last met up way back on December 22 at Bartow Arena. That one ended up as a 76-68 Blazers win thanks to a 35-28 first-half start. UAB is going to have to start quickly—and finish well—in this road rematch but I think they’re up for the challenge.
