Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State started out the year pretty well, going 15-4 over their first 19 outings. Since then the Cyclones are just 2-5 however, falling to Missouri, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Kansas State with wins over Kansas and TCU otherwise.
In the Kansas State matchup on Saturday, the Cyclones took a 31-23 edge into the second half. Iowa State couldn’t hold on in a 38-24 deficit from there and lost 61-55. Aljaz Kunc was the top team scorer on 15 points and five rebounds.
Texas Longhorns
Over on the Texas side, they held a nice 17-3 record over their first 20 games this season. The Longhorns are 4-3 in their last seven with wins over Baylor, Kansas State, West Virginia and Oklahoma mixed with losses to Tennessee, Kansas and Texas Tech.
In the Oklahoma game Saturday, the Longhorns scored 34 points in the first half, 39 in the second and 12 in overtime for a tense 85-83 victory. Jabari Rice was the lead scorer with 24 points, and Marcus Carr added 17 points with six boards.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with Texas. You could make a case either way here, though; it should be a great matchup. The Longhorns are coming off a sketchy game versus Oklahoma (a team they probably should have beaten handily at home) and they’re 2-2 in their last four overall. Texas is still playing well at Moody however, and they’ll need that extra lift in this matchup. The last time these teams met up back on January 17 at Hilton Coliseum, the Cyclones powered out a 78-67 win that featured a 42-32 second half. I like this one to be competitive and fairly high-scoring, with Texas powering out a home cover for some revenge.
