FIU Panthers

The Panthers started out on a sketchy 7-11 run this year. FIU was able to win just one of their next eight games (versus Sam Houston). It’s been a 3-3 stretch since then with wins over Liberty, Western Kentucky and Jacksonville State alongside losses to Jacksonville State, UTEP and New Mexico State.

In Tuesday’s matchup versus Jacksonville State, the Panthers were down 37-33 by the break. Florida International stormed back on a 43-30 second-half run however, powering out the victory 76-67 in the end. Leading the way was Arturo Dean on 21 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Sam Houston Bearkats

Over on the Bearkats’ side, they got off to a 13-9 start this year before taking losses to FIU and Jacksonville State in February. Sam Houston has since beaten FIU, Liberty, New Mexico State, UTEP, Middle Tennessee, Louisiana Tech and Jacksonville State in their last seven games.

Matched up against Jacksonville State over the weekend, the Bearkats held a 39-35 edge going into the second half. Sam Houston kept it up with a 42-38 run the rest of the way in an 81-73 win. Tops in scoring was Souleymane Doumbia with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE FIU VS SAM HOUSTON PREDICTION

I’ll probably just stay with Sam Houston in this one. The Bearkats are playing well these days and didn’t have too many issues with Jacksonville State over the weekend. In that one Sam Houston shot a nice 54 percent from the field with 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from 3-point range and 21 points off 17 Gamecocks turnovers. That makes 81 points in two of the last three games for the Bearkats.

Back on February 15 in the last meeting between these teams, Sam Houston took a 70-56 home win. The Bearkats coughed up 23 turnovers for 25 Panthers points, but otherwise they played pretty well. FIU did get a win 68-61 in the February 3 matchup, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Panthers play well either. I’m still likely leaning toward Sam Houston, though.
