Clemson Tigers
Clemson opened up the year on a pretty solid 18-4 clip through 22 games. The Tigers are a sketchy 3-4 in their last seven, falling to Boston College, Miami, North Carolina and Louisville in that time with wins over Florida State, Syracuse and NC State otherwise.
In the NC State matchup on Saturday, the Tigers jumped out to a 54-29 halftime advantage. Clemson cruised on a 42-42 second and took the blowout win 96-71. Brevin Galloway led the team on 28 points with three assists and Hunter Tyson doubled on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Virginia Cavaliers
Over on the Virginia side, they posted a 16-3 stretch through their first 19 games this year. In their last eight the Cavaliers are 5-3 with wins over Syracuse, NC State, Duke, Louisville and Notre Dame. The losses came to Virginia Tech, Boston College and North Carolina.
In the North Carolina matchup on Saturday, the Cavaliers went into the break with a 42-26 deficit. Virginia fought back on a 37-29 run in the second but still lost 71-63. Jayden Gardner put up 19 points with 12 rebounds in the defeat.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll take a stab on Clemson here. We should have a pretty good matchup on our hands regardless. The Tigers are a solid 3-1 in their last four games, and they’ve scored 71 or more points in six straight outings. As for Virginia, they’ve stumbled in the last pair with a combined 111 points in consecutive losses. The Cavaliers are still playing solid defense and should receive a boost from the John Paul Jones Arena surroundings. That said, I think Clemson can stay in range and post a cover in the end. Should be a fun one.
