Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia managed to go 10-3 to start out the season, losing to only Houston, Miami FL and Pittsburgh. The Cavaliers have since beaten Syracuse, UNC, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Boston College and Syracuse again in succession.

In the Syracuse rematch on Monday, the Cavaliers nursed a slim 36-35 lead going into the second half. Virginia posted a 31-27 run from there and won it 67-62. Leading scorer Jayden Gardner put up 17 points with eight rebounds.

Virginia Tech Hokies

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they lost to Charleston, Boston College, Wake Forest, Clemson and NC State in their first 16 outings. The Hokies are just 2-4 since then with losses to Syracuse, Virginia, Clemson and Miami.

In the Miami matchup on Tuesday, the Hokies were within one point in the locker room. Virginia Tech was outpaced 47-39 in the second half and lost 92-83, however. Both Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor scored 20 points each.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably stick with Virginia here. The Cavaliers are cruising right along on a seven-game win streak, scoring 65 or more points in every game. Virginia has been pretty sharp on defense in that time as well; they’ve given up 68 or fewer points in each of those outings as well. The last time these teams met up at John Paul Jones Arena on January 18, Virginia powered out a 78-68 win thanks to a 40-31 first half. Virginia Tech has been scoring well lately with 78 or more points in three straight outings; if the Hokies can keep that up then they’ll give Virginia some trouble in this rematch. I still think the Cavaliers end up covering/winning, though.

Andrew's Free Pick: Virginia Cavaliers -1
