Tennessee State took on Eastern Washington in their first outing of the season, ultimately losing a tough one 36-29 after giving up 29 points in the first half. QB Draylen Ellis posted 257 yards with two TDs and a pick, while Devon Starling had 207 rush yards and a score.

In game two versus Jackson State, the Tigers had an early lead but didn’t score after the first quarter in a 16-3 loss. Ellis finished with 138 yards on 10-of-24 passing. Starling led the rush with 70 yards, and Cam Wyche caught two balls for 52 yards.

Over on the Middle Tennessee side, they gave up 21 points to James Madison in the second quarter of their 2022 opener and ended up losing 44-7. QB Chase Cunningham had 116 yards and a score. Yusuf Ali led the receivers with 60 yards and a TD from eight grabs.

In game two versus Colorado State, the Raiders jumped out to a 27-0 lead at halftime and cruised to the 34-19 win. Cunningham logged 266 yards with a TD and a pick, and Frank Peasant led the rushing attack with 93 yards and a couple of scores.

PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Middle Tennessee. The Raiders got off to a nice start versus Colorado State over the weekend, and it served them well in a nice bounce-back victory. Middle Tennessee gave up just 246 yards, 3.8 yards per play and 16 first downs. The Raiders came up with four turnovers and held the Rams to negative-10 yards rushing in a great defensive effort. With Tennessee State coming off a rough offensive performance, they’re going to have an uphill battle here.
