Coco Gauff and Yulia Putintseva meet in the second round of the 2022 tennis Madrid Open.

Coco Gauff is coming off a straight set win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Gauff won 77 percent of her first serve points and 31 percent of her second serve points. Gauff won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her six break points. Gauff got 77 percent of her first serves in play and saved all three break points. Gauff won the first eight games of the match. It was one of Gauff’s best performances of the season, and she looks for back-to-back wins for the first time since Miami. It was Gauff’s first win in Madrid and her 20th WTA 1000 victory. Gauff has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.

Yulia Putintseva is coming off a straight set win over Shelby Rogers that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Putintseva won 66 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points. Putintseva won 59 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 12 break points. Putintseva saved five of her eight break points and got 74 percent of her first serves in play. The match took two hours to finish, so it was a grueling and feel good victory for the 27-year-old Russian. Putintseva has won eight of her last 11 matches overall and is in the second round of Madrid for the second time in her career. Putintseva has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.

These two played once which was 2021 Rome, a match Gauff won in three sets. The match was decided in 32 games.

There’s some appeal to Putintseva and the plus money here based on her experience and form, but she also struggled with her second serve in her last match. Putintseva also has little to no success in WTA 1000 tournaments, so she’s not trustworthy in these spots. Gauff is coming off a dominating performance, and she’s always had a knack for showing up on the big stages. We also can’t ignore Gauff beating Putintseva on clay last year.

Give me Gauff to advance.
