Borussia Dortmund is welcoming Ajax to Signal Iduna Park in round 4 of Group C of the UEFA Champions League. Borussia is in solid form right now, they are winning in Bundesliga, and they are in 2nd place in their Champions League group. Ajax has been outstanding so far in the Champions League, and they are also brilliant in the Eredivisie this season.
As I’ve mentioned, Borussia is in 2nd place of this group with 6 points, 3 scored goals, and 5 conceded goals, and without Haaland, they will really need to boost their defense. Borussia Dortmund is now on a 3-game winning streak during which they scored 7 goals while conceding only 1 goal, and their defense is solid right now. In their last game against Koln at home, Borussia has had 42% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal 4 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and 75% of the correct passes. This wasn’t the best game for Borussia, but they got the job done with 2 scored goals and a solid defense. The final result was 2-0. Haaland, Malen, and Bellingham have each scored 1 goal for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, and some other players will need to step up now that Haaland is injured. Borussia is a solid team, and they will most likely advance past the group stage, but I think the top spot is out of their reach.
Ajax has all 3 wins so far in the Champions League, and they have scored impressive 11 goals in those 3 games. Ajax’s defense was also impressive with only 1 conceded goal so far. Haller has scored 6 of those 11 goals for Ajax, and he has been one of the best strikers in Europe in this early season. Ajax is pretty much untouchable in the Eredivisie as well where they are at the top, but what is more impressive is that Ajax has scored 37 goals in 11 games. In the reverse fixture of this matchup a few weeks ago, Ajax has had 55% of ball possession, 9 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and 88% of the correct passes. Ajax has won this game 4-0, but it could have been a lot worse for Borussia if they have just a bit more focus in the attacking end. Ajax has always been a great team, they are always producing young and talented players, and it’s the same now, and I for one am happy they are playing this well.
Dortmund has never lost to Ajax at home, but with all the injuries in their roster, it will be hard to go toe to toe with this Ajax team. Goals are the way to go here.
